The quiet art of really listening
5 min read · A moment for a new perspective
Listening begins with attention. Before looking for the perfect response, notice whether you are making space for the other person to finish their thought.
Try one open question: What would you most like me to understand about this? Then summarize the answer in your own words and ask whether you understood it correctly.
A good summary is tentative. It gives the speaker room to correct you. This small habit can turn an exchange of opinions into a shared attempt to understand a situation.
Reflection: In your next conversation, notice one moment when curiosity helps you hear something you might otherwise have missed.
